Take Charge Of Your Life By Simply Making a Plan

Are you cruising along the river of life not noticing where you are going and why? For some, this may be the ideal way to live. A minimal amount of planning and no expectations on what to get out of life. Simply because you’re here reading this article, I doubt you will identify with the laissez faire way of life. Instead, you know we are only here for a limited amount of time and you want to squeeze all the fun, love and joy from this one life that you possibly can.

Give Wings To Your Dreams
A dream without goals attached to it is really just wishful thinking. Hoping is not a strategy that will get you far. If you want something in life, you have to go out there and get it! Setting goals and achieving them is the fuel that feeds the fire.
You’ll build confidence and stamina; both of which are going to come in very handy if you have some big bold dreams to bring to life.

However, that doesn’t change the fact that goal setting can be pretty scary. It’s during the goal setting process that a lot of people will give up and throw in the towel before they even got started. Why?

Don’t Blow The Fuse
When we sit down and plan out which steps to take to make our dream a reality, the steps can overload our system. This is because the brain doesn’t always know the difference between what is real and what is imagined.

Picture yourself setting a weight-loss goal. You may start to think about all the hard work you’re going to have to put in at the gym several times a week or how you need to get up at 5am every other day to make it there. Maybe you’re imagining all the money you need to spend on groceries and the many hours required for the food preparation. and what You become overwhelmed! But remember, you’re not doing it all at once, you’ll take it day by day. Break your goals down into bite-sized to-dos and suddenly you have made real tangible process without blowing the fuse.


Believe In Yourself
Another reason why people give up on setting goals is because they are afraid of letting themselves down.

“Oh but what if I set all these goals and I don’t follow through – then I have failed!” No, you have not failed. Instead, you have learnt how NOT to do things. Where did you trip over? Where did you fall short? Did you think you had 34 hours in a day instead of 24? Did you forget you also need to take a breath and have fun and be social?

Set more goals and create new habits that better support the ones you had in the first place. If your goal is to hit the gym early in the morning, and you are unable to get up at said hour then look at when you are going to bed instead. Maybe your secondary goal is to start a new habit of going to bed earlier. This will make it easier to follow through on your primary goal.

SMART goals
I’m sure you all know about SMART goals but maybe you only apply these in a professional setting and not in your personal life?

SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound.
As an example, if your dream is to become fit and healthy, your SMART goals may look like this:

  • I want to lose 5 kilos by Christmas
  • I want to be able to run 5 kms in the fun run in 3 months
  • I want to lower my alcohol intake to maximum 2 drinks per week for a period of 6 months.

These goals are now both specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound.
